In the light of lowering the response level in relation to COVID-19 epidemic to alert level, the COVID-19 epidemic situation no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. This year, the ASM Nursing Symposium finally bring us together ‘face-to-face’ to share experiences and recent development on anaesthetic considerations on ambulatory care, augmented reality simulation training on anaesthetic aspect and yoga therapy in pain clinic. By understanding these new developments that can further contribute to the medical field and community, we can help advance the services to patients. We welcome all the participants and contributors to join us at ASM Nursing Symposium and we hope that your presence will add to the brilliance of our important meeting.
Optional Workshops
W1: Nursing Workshop
Date: 18 November 2023
Time: 11:00 – 12:30
Instructor: Dr. Flori LAM (Hong Kong)
Facilitator: Ms. Oi-Lam CHAN (Hong Kong)
Chronic pain is a multidimensional experience, shaped by physiological, psychological and social factors. Approaches for management may include both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Art therapy, as one from of psychotherapy, helps to lower the perception of pain by moving a patient’s mental focus away from the painful stimulus. Engaging in art therapy helps people reclaim ownership in their lives and create what they want, subsequently their improves quality of life and increases their self-efficacy. Though art therapy dose not replace the need for pain killers, it can be used as an effective complement and reduce perceptions of pain experience. In practice, we use pastels, simple tools and our fingers to create a gentle and soft art. Patients do not have to be an artist to benefit from art therapy, but the focus is not the finished work or the applied technique, but the process and its calming, relaxing effect on the artist.
The aim of this workshop is to
1. Demonstrate the complementary Pain management therapy
2. Practise pastel art for chronic pain patients
Instructor: Prof. Philip PENG (Canada)
Facilitators: Dr. Diane CHAN, Dr. Michelle CHEUNG, Dr. Debriel OR, Dr. Fiona TSUI, Dr. Aaron Chee-Lun YING (Hong Kong)

Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) has been increasingly utilized in many disciplines as an adjunct diagnostic tool, including the field of anaesthesia. Its portability and diagnostic capability make it particularly useful in time-deprived critical situations where formal radiological investigation is practically impossible such as intraoperative setting.
PoCUS encompasses systematic assessment of cardiac, pulmonary and pleural, intra-abdominal, vascular and musculoskeletal system. Because of the bedside availability, ease of use and reproducibility, PoCUS is now frequently used as part of the clinical assessment during resuscitation, allowing timely diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment.
Through live demonstration and hands-on scanning, our tutors will take you through some of the key areas of PoCUS from knobology and image acquisition, to interpretation and integration to clinical practice.

Healthcare workers are exposed to high levels of stress during work and are susceptible to burnout, both physically and mentally. It is important for healthcare workers to find ways to relieve and handle stress. Yoga is a good way in promoting the release of endorphins which promote relaxation!
Our 90-minute yoga class for healthcare workers is the perfect opportunity to unwind and de-stress. In the first 45 minutes, led by an experienced yoga instructor, you will move through a series of gentle yoga poses and breathing exercises designed to release tension from your body and calm your mind. Suitable for all levels of yoga experience, modifications and adjustments will be provided as needed to ensure that everyone is able to practice safely and comfortably. In the later 45 minutes, we will have a session on singing bowl meditation. Singing bowls are now frequently used in sound therapy and meditation. The sound they emit is helpful for relaxation, stress relief and cultivating a sense of balance and well-being.
Prioritizing your own well-being is crucial, especially in high-stress professions like healthcare. Join us for this 90-minute yoga and singing bowl class and take the first step towards a more relaxed, balanced, and fulfilling life.

“Precision Medicine in Respiratory Care by Electrical Impedance Tomography”
Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a noninvasive and radiation-free lung function imaging method. Cyclic variations in pulmonary air and blood content are the major determinants for the changes in thoracic impedance. Besides features like being a bedside imaging tool and providing the possibility of around-the-clock monitoring, the high temporal resolution is a crucial aspect of EIT imaging that allows for the study not only of ventilation distribution but also of faster physiological phenomena, such as pulmonary perfusion distribution.
What also leverages EIT in relation to other lung imaging methods is being a real-time and continuous method. It enables dynamic online monitoring and evaluation of critical respiratory function information, such as ventilation distribution, global and regional lung volumes, regional respiratory mechanics, and regional blood flow distribution. It allows a fine-tuning of mechanical ventilation, body positioning, and other respiratory care strategies. EIT clinical tools can be capable of providing timely precision medicine in respiratory care.

W10: GAIN - How to Embrace the Pillars of Happiness Workshop
Date: 19 November 2023
Time: 15:30 – 17:00
Facilitator: Prof. Gregory HAMMER (USA)
Why is burnout so prevalent in our profession? Burnout is the mental and physical fatigue we experience due to chronic stress. Why do we experience so much stress? Why are we not happier? In this workshop, we will explore in an interactive fashion the ways in which our brains operate that appear to veil our ability to be truly happy. In addition, we will share a simple practice that can reduce our stress, guide us toward a happier way of being, and gradually re-wire our brains.
Over tens of thousands of years of evolution our brains have become hard-wired in ways that may have once been adaptive but are now maladaptive. We have acquired a negativity bias – we tend to remember our negative thoughts and experiences and cast aside the positive ones.
We will share our own examples of this. In addition, we over-think the past and future. Coupled with our negativity bias, this results in shame, regret, and low self-esteem as we mull over past events, and fear and anxiety as we consider what the future may hold.
Fortunately, our brains are possessed with the magical quality of neuroplasticity. We can actually re-wire our brains if we have a plan and a regular practice. We will discuss and experience together the GAIN meditation, wherein we sit for as little as 3 minutes per day to contemplate our Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention, and Nonjudgment. These are the 4 elements that comprise the GAIN acronym. We can become more positive, more present, and more resilient through this practice.
