Abstract
Anaesthesia and Cardiac Failure

Cardiac failure is relatively common in our society, particularly with an ageing population.

The etiology, diagnosis, current definitions and the latest evidence-based treatments will be presented including the role of holistic therapy, medication, devices, including ventricular assist devices, and heart transplants.

As a potentially relatively stable chronic condition some of these patients may present for urgent and/or elective surgery including for cancer treatment and joint replacement surgery.

The most appropriate management of these patients during the peri-operative period will be discussed.
