Reducing maternal mortality is a global objective. Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) contributed the majority of maternal and perinatal deaths. The causes of deaths differed among LMIC and high-income countries (HIC). Published international mortality report by either incorporating the data into China’s or missing Hong Kong’s may fail to capture the actual performance of Hong Kong. Although the maternal mortality ratio of Hong Kong appears low, there has been no local confidential enquiry into maternal death, and underreporting is likely. In this talk, we will cover the recent findings of a cross-sectional study which revealed the hidden burden of maternal mortality. The role of obstetricians and anaesthetists in the prevention of maternal mortality will also be covered.
